Thursday Thirteen: Random, Random, Random - September 16, 2021

Thursday is two things around here.  Garbage Day and  Thursday Thirteen. I've gone random this week!

1 - A hummingbird came buzzing towards me on one of the recent smoky days.  I was lucky to get this much on camera it was so fast and unexpected.

2 - Speaking of hummingbirds, I got this pretty glass feeder on clearance.  I haven't hung it yet.

3 - A really cute watering can at Goodwill I did NOT buy, as they priced it too high for me.

4 - A man with a little girl around five was in front of me at a store the other day.  He was poking her, bugging her, teasing like, and she said, "Stop it."  He replied, "I don't have to.  I can do whatever I want."  I hope he didn't mean it, but even if he didn't, those words can do damage.   He was teaching that girl her "no" means nothing, and adults can do whatever they want even if you don't like it.  Especially the wrong message for a girl to hear.

5 -  I will admit, grammar errors are my pet peeve, and while I may not always get things correct, I DO know when to use "me" and when to use "I."  Unlike this editor of a big magazine in her September "welcome to the issue" feature.  (Know the super easy way to tell?  Take out the other person, and would you use "I" or "me"?  It doesn't change when you add the other person.)  I guess the editor didn't get edited.

6 - The fall planted bulbs are showing up in the stores!  I got some of these, and Persian Blue a couple of years ago, and they did really well until this year.  But, a lot of things didn't do well this year.  They were $2.98 previously, but the price increased this year.  Now they are the outrageous price of $2.99!  Why bother increasing it at all?

7 - Mickey's the only dog I've had, the only dog I've known, who glows red when he's wound up!  The pale pink skin around his eyes, in his ears, under the thin white hair of his muzzle, and the bottom of his pads, turns red when he's excited!  That happens daily around 7:30 pm, when he behaves like an over-tired toddler who refuses to admit he or she is tired.  I give him a bone or a long lasting chew every single night to settle him down.  He then carries one of them outside every single time he goes out, so I'm always collecting them and bringing them back in.  Or, throwing them out, to keep the yard from looking like a graveyard!

8 - Another snippet from a magazine, maybe even the same one...  My house isn't messy, it's casually strewn.

9 - The rough designs on the table outside collected dew this morning.

10 - I will read most anything, but I just couldn't read this beyond chapter one.  It was on the free cart at the library, so that should have been the first clue.  Second?  That synopsis on the back!  Doctor Whalen has this machine where, when he flips a switch, the patients "consciousness will be separated from their bodies until the surgery is completed..."  Wow.  I wish it had been easier to read, I would  have liked to find out how one man's consciousness ended up in Spain, in Juan Valdez!  Isn't Juan Valdez that Colombian coffee man in those old ads?

11 - I shared an update on the Primoza Growable Calendar seed paper growing results on Instagram and they shared it on their story!   I'll be sharing the results so far here soon.

12 - Trader Joe's has a cookie mix for the fall season, this Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookie Mix.  They aren't as good as they sound.  I'd say they are gingersnap oatmeal with chocolate chunks.   They are chewy on the inside and hard on the outside, and if I baked them as long as it said they'd have been burnt.  They are those cookies that will be soft on the top and already brown on the bottom, so easy to over-cook.  The mix was an impulse buy, and I didn't have any cubes of butter (I never have real butter) or cooking margarine in the house, so actually bought butter at Trader Joe's too!  I used one cube in the recipe, and froze the others.  Honestly, I thought butter would taste much better than it did after not having the real thing for so long.  Eh.  I like the Country Crock Plant Butter with olive oil.

13 -A PVC rock climber holding a monitor in the neighborhood.  Usually people make their cameras a bit less obvious.  I haven't figured out what the PVC figure in the background is doing.

There you go, Thirteen on Thursday.

  1. I'm random too! I wonder if other dogs go red but you just can't see it. Grammar mistakes isn't my pet peeve unless they are so obvious. The I/m e mistake always bothers me too. Fun TT!

    1. Another peeve of mine is misplaced apostrophes! I had another white Border collie mix and I didn't notice him red up. But, he was a nervous dog, not an excitable one. This one is very excitable!

  2. Enjoyable Thursday thirteen! I am curious about the PVC people. I'd guess the one in the far back is also holding a camera. But maybe this is just an artistic way of being . . . artistic? The book you couldn't finish has an interesting premise but it sounds poorly written from your description. That's a shame. Thanks for sharing today!

  3. People also use "phase" instead of "faze" and it bugs me. Also, the substitution of "that" as in "people that" instead of "people who" is almost universal now. Ohhhh, I love butter. Love it. Kerrygold grass fed. What that guy said to the child is just terrible.

    1. My other two "peeves" are misuse of apostrophes, and one that is getting harder and harder to avoid, as it's become common usage, "they" when it's a singular.

  4. I'm all for the oreo-like cookies with the orange filling from Trader Joe's at Halloween. They even had them the last time I was there. I saw that cookie mix. I passed. Sounds like it was a good thing I did.

    1. I'll have to take a look next time. Which won't be long, Mickey needs a Charlee Bear treat refill! That's the real reason I go to Trader Joe's.
