 Skywatch Friday

Come join the fun and share your sky!

Some sunrise photos without too many wires, taken a little before 8:00am a few days ago.  Still January though.

Crow leaving the incense cedar.

I like the bare trees next door.

Here...  I'll cut out the rooftops.

Our Oregon shadow caster, Stumptown Fil (short for Filbert) saw his shadow.  More winter...  Although, last year he forecast an early spring, and the zoo (Portland) had to close due to snow in April.  So, don't rely on Fil!

Speaking of filberts, they are also known as hazelnuts, and Oregon happens to produce 99% of all the hazelnuts in the U.S.  It's our state nut!  Do you have a state nut?  Not all states do.  Want to find out?  Here's a list by state, and you can search for state rocks, foods, dances, and more!

  1. ...when I was in the nursery business I visited supplies in the Portland area and saw many filbert orchards. Agriculture in Oregon is a diverse industry.

    1. I always get a kick out of the signs along I-5 in the Willamette Valley about it being the "Grass Seed Capital of the World!" Then signs on fences denoting what grass is being grown. "Tall Fescue" "Seasonal Rye" My valley, Rogue, has vineyards, and pears are the big thing. Harry and David is here.

  2. I like those sunrises with flashes of pink or red. New York State doesn't have an official nut (not surprising; nuts aren't a major crop for us) but we do have an official muffin. Who knew?

    1. I don't have a muffin! I notice my son in Rhode Island has a state appetizer. Calamari. I'll have to ask him if they have a Calamari Festival! I've had it, no thanks.

    1. Thank you. Sunrises with color are rarer here.

  5. We don't have a state nut which surprises me as there are huge almond farms. Oh well. Pretty sky.

    1. That is surprising. Don't most of the almonds come from there?

  6. Yesterday it is like 4 above Zero. Today it will go up to near 30s. The saying is wait 5 minutes the weather in Chicagoland will change. Believe me, it can! No nut listed.

  7. We have a bunch of state nuts. They are in the legislature. (Sorry, couldn't resist). Beautiful shots. I don't worry about wires.
