Himalayan Blackberries and a Really Good Photo!
If you live in the Pacific Northwest you are familiar with the wild Himalayan blackberry. Not Himalayan, but Armenian, these extremely invasive brambles. They are aggressive growers, spreading through seed as well as rhizomes from underground, or just a cane laying on the soil. Or, pieces of rhizome or cane after trying to dig them up! I had a "patch" in my far back yard when I moved in. I left it a season, not knowing that a one foot bramble would spread to eight feet within a few months. Himalayan blackberry canes (vines) can grow 25' or more in one season, reaching 15'.
I was naive!
I thought it was possible to remove them all.
Blackberries are members of the Roseceae family, which also includes roses. So, when some Himalayan blackberries snuck into my climbing roses I didn't notice for quite a while. Now, it's near impossible to get to them without significant bloodshed!
So, instead, I have an "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" sort of thing going on!
They are delicious! Still some bloodshed involved picking them, especially when they are mixed in with climbing roses. I'm skipping a lot of them.
Drip
I thought I'd failed, however, when I went through the dozens and dozens of "drip" photos, I found this one! (I am quite proud of this photo, perseverance paid off!)
Drop
The roses won't be able to compete with the blackberries, so something will have to be done. I don't look forward to the "something."
