Tuesday Treasures - The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine - 1884-1885

A couple of years ago the Goodwill Bins had weeks with multiple bins filled with antique and vintage books.  My son and I went a bit crazy!  I sold a couple for a nice profit (since they were only 25¢ it wouldn't take much to make a profit).  Both of us have been weeding them recently.  There were three in particular that I want to share, or share their contents.  Two were beyond salvaging, so I didn't feel guilty removing some of the illustrations.

First...

Many issues of the magazine were bound into one single volume.

There was quite a long feature on Florence, Italy.

Other illustrations included,

Curling - "Soup Her Up!"

...and "Held by the Enemy."  I have this one ready to frame.  I have the mat, and the antique wooden frame just needs to be painted gold.  I'll show you when it's done.  Don't be alarmed that I'm painting an antique frame!  The original finish is chipped off.

The other two books (both St. Nicolas illustrations will be two additional posts, in a few weeks.  A lot of antique and vintage prints are book illustrations.  They were made in one of three basic print methods.  Relief printing, intaglio, and planographic, which includes lithography.  Most books and magazines with high-volume text were printing using offset lithography. They would be mass produced, then bound into the books.  You may see the term "plate" with a page number on these.
