I found a real treasure at Goodwill!

An antique overpainted photograph.  23" high, originally it would have had convex glass in the frame.  Stamped on the back "Imperial Sales Co. Portland - Ore."  Not surprisingly, it's no longer in business.  One of the interns told me he thought it looked like it could be children of a "rich San Francisco industrialist."   Being from Portland it's more likely the children of a lumber baron!

Incredible frame!  It's curved pieces of wood, put together with mortise and tenon joints.

The best was first, so anything else feels like a letdown.

I did find this acrylic painting in the Goodwill Bins.  It was in a frame with glass, so glass price total of 39¢.  Not a good frame, and an old paper mat. It's painted on canvas board, so no need to be behind glass. No signature, but it's after Maurice Vlaminck's The River.  An amateur attempt, but it caught my eye.

The same day this small cedar chest was rescued from the Bins.  A woman had just put it back, having changed her mind on using it for growing herbs on her deck.  I wouldn't have paid by weight, but the cashier priced it for me at $1.00.  It's not in as good shape as some online, so maybe herbs are in its future!

A St. Vincent de Paul find is this vintage nut chopper.  It is missing the original jar bottom, but, since it didn't screw on, any standard canning jar or glass works.  Quite an atomic space-age design, as was the "thing" in the '50s!

Here it is in action on one of my drinking glasses (of course thrifted!).

St. Vincent de Paul had another batch of 5¢ postcards, mostly new with scenes of Oregon, even of my part of the state.  I bought 25, they are perfect for Postcrossing cards.
Some fun stuff!

  2. The picture was quite a find, but I like the space-age nut chopper. Reminds me of the Jetsons.

  3. I remember those nut choppers from my childhood. I guess I must be vintage, too? That photo and frame are wonderful. Great find, yes.
