Tuesday Treasures - May 20, 2025 - The City-Wide Yard Sale Day

So, the rain did hold off for the most part on Saturday, the nearby city's City-Wide Yard Sale Day.  Because it was forecast a lot of participants put things out the day before.  My son and I happened to be out and followed signs to quite a few sales.  Some were people we'd bought from in previous years, but their items just weren't as interesting.  Over all, both Friday and Saturday were underwhelming.

These are Friday's best finds.

Marigold carnival glass coaster.

Guatemalan hand-carved and painted dog.

Terra-cotta bowl made in the Philippines.

On Saturday, one of the first things I found was the 1950s salt and pepper shaker set.  I've not seen one like it, so for $1 I made sure to add it to my collection.  Only it can't go in the hutch, it will hang on the kitchen cabinet end.  It seems unused, and very clean (not like some vintage kitchen things that have the thick kitchen greasy dirt on them!).

The shaker holder also comes off for table use.  There is one of these without the shakers for sale online, calling it a teabag or match holder.  No, they are just missing the shakers!  Although, it would make a cute teabag holder.

I bought a button box for the marbles that were in it, but found these antique buttons as well.

A few hours into Saturday's saling, with a friend rather than my son, it started raining.  We took the opportunity to go to an estate sale about ten miles away.   Not in a house, it was in a warehouse, and very organized.  It was the second day, and 25% off.  It wasn't raining there.

For me:
1950s Camark pottery hound in maroon.  It's described as either a "pooping" or a "sniffing" hound.  Being as there is a matching peeing hound, with hydrant, I'd say "pooping" is correct!   At least they didn't make a pottery poop to go with him.

For my son:
While he told me "No more typewriters or cameras, I don't have room," I didn't agree to that, telling him I would get them if they were very old or special!  A camera doesn't take up that much room!
Rolleiflex 2.8 F Type 2 manufactured in Germany, and introduced in 1960.
It is "...widely considered one of the finest TLR (twin-lens reflex) cameras ever made."  Well... I guess I did the right thing ignoring my son's
"No more cameras" request!

By the time we got back to the City-Wide Sale city the rain there had stopped.  We visited a few more addresses on our lists (the city posts addresses and a Google map where you can click on the address icon and it shows what items they are selling).

Four hours later we were done.  Yard saling is exhausting!

I wasn't completely done though.  Sunday is the day my son (who skipped the Saturday sales) go looking for free piles.  He found nothing, I found a few things. Also, some yard sales I'd missed the day before, or in one case, one that hadn't been open Saturday due to weather.

Not free:
It's hard to resist studio pottery in blue!  I'm still working out the signature.

Rabbit on a Nest or the Easter Bunny laying Easter eggs. I haven't located a mark, the seller mentioned two possible vintage glass makers.  She had quite a bit of vintage glass, so I believe she knew what she was doing.  It may be L. E. Smith.

Free:

I'd seen this Saturday for 50¢ but wasn't 50¢ worth fond of it.  Free the next day?  Sure!  It's from 1964.  There is one for sale online listed as "hammered copper art," but it's not.  It's copper colored plastic.  Any buyer will be very disappointed!  16" high.

A curb pile that seemed to be just car parts, but I pulled over and asked my son to see if the box really had a fan in it.  It had two new, unwrapped fans!   With warmer weather coming (we had it for a bit, now it's cold and drippy again) I'm not turning down free fans!  I bought one at a sale on Saturday for $10, a nice one, for my room.  Now I find that Vornado fans are expensive!  Like over $100 for the one I got!  Now I regret not getting the smaller one for $5.

Maybe the fall sale will be better. Or, perhaps two a year is too often and the city ought to go back to one.

  1. If the same people are selling, they might be low on stuff they need to get rid of. That's the only explanation I can think of for the poor inventory. Great score on the fans.

    1. One regular is an elderly (quite) woman who is slowing selling off her own things. Her daughter told her she'll throw them out when her mother's gone, so the woman is trying to find them new homes. She didn't put out much of interest this time. I think some other regulars must buy storage units or estate stale leftovers, they have different sorts of things each sale. But, your are right for the average sellers. Goodwill was inundated with leftovers yesterday, but one employee told me they couldn't take a lot of it due to the rain. They can't box up wet or damp clothing etc. due to mildew issues.

    1. I showed my son your enthusiastic comment! I paid under $30 for it. He thinks it has film in it, the counter is on 8. It was on 7, now he says if there's film one photo is of his floor!

  4. I have no desire to collect anything, but do find it interesting to see what other people buy.

  5. Wow, fabulous finds! I can't pick a favorite--they're all awesome. I have a small button collection, but I'm thinking of adding to it. They're so fascinating and some are beautiful.

    1. I don't have so much a collection as a box of old buttons! My mother's and grandmother's. Then a baggie of ones I've found in the Goodwill bins, some are antique metal. They are beautiful and fascinating!

  6. The camera and the buttons - great finds! I'll bet your son was delighted. About 2 1/2 to 3 hours from where I live is Rochester, New York, which had the Rochester Button Factory, which, from what I understand, was a popular maker of buttons.

  7. Lots and lots of pretties. Must stop again at the small resale shop again .
We've been to Guatemala, me twice and the Mrs once. I don't have an article souvenir to show for it. I have on my "Jim's Little Blog" some pictures. I have stopped it for a while, when I stopped Tom's weekend Alphabet was about all I was doing.
I have started again poems for "Friday Writings."

    1. I'm so happy to get this comment, I've been worried about you! i haven't been posting to my poetry blog. I was getting weird comments, and while they weren't published, were worrisome. I thought maybe putting the blog on private for a while might discourage the weirdos!

    1. And while I'm think about it, maybe I'll plan a post with thrifted items from different countries. I do have a small souvenir mask from Guatemala that's a dog face. My grandmother went to Guatemala when I was a little girl, or before I was born maybe, and gave my mother the prettiest embroidered fabric. She made a vest and I had a sort of skirt. I wish I kept it for the fabric.
