Sun Halo
A sun halo is a rainbow-like ring around the Sun. It's caused by sunlight through ice crystals in high altitude clouds, due to refraction, reflection, and dispersion of the sunlight. The light bends at a 22 degree angle. The halo will be red on the inside and blue on the outside. If we go by folklore, they signal incoming rain. Rain is in the forecast tomorrow. I hope folklore is wrong in this case, tomorrow is the big city-wide yard sale!
This photo was taken by someone who works at the nearby school. I got a text telling me to go take a look.
This is all I could see. Just a little different angle and not even the contrails for me!
Have a nice weekend.
Wow
ReplyDeleteI've seen those halos but I don't think I was ever successful in photographing them. Nice capture.
ReplyDeleteThe top image is so different than the bottom photograph. You presented some thought provoking images. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDelete...keep looking up!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat would make sense, though. If ice crystals are high in the sky, it is likely that rain is on the way. Sometimes. What does the weather report say, though? (I trust weather forecasters way more than folklore. The weather forecasters have better tools in their toolbox to see what's coming.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, and a rare site!
ReplyDeleteI'm never noticed a sun halo before. I'm going to be on the lookout.
ReplyDeleteI'll keep my fingers crossed for no rain for you!!
