I dropped off donations to St. Vincent de Paul in mid December, but before that I went in to take a look around.

They put out more vintage postcards, mostly from Missouri.  I got one packet of 17 since the front picture and the back information were both hotels.  I like old hotel postcards!  15 of them were 1960s hotel/inn postcards, one was a shopping center, and one of what was then the Unity Inn, which is now Unity Village (Unity Church).

Then... the cutest two etchings of cats, framed together!  They are by Susan Sturgill, an artist from Ohio.  In the '70s she sold her original drawings, moved on to offset lithography, then limited edition etchings, such as these, which she personally produced through all the stages.  She is now retired.  It's in a professional metal frame.

"Box" 49/100 and "Bag" 50/100

An etching begins with a metal plate; copper is commonly used.  Acid resistant wax is applied to the plate, then the artist scratches the design into the wax to expose the metal underneath.  The plate is then submerged in acid which eats away the exposed metal, leaving recessed lines.  After the plate is cleaned of wax it can be inked to fill the lines, then the excess ink is removed.  A damp paper is laid over the plate and put through a printing press, squeezing the paper and print together, pressing the imagine onto the paper.  The indented square area seen is from the plate.  Etching is a specific type of intaglio printing.
