Autumn Skies and Autumn Color - November 10, 2023

Skywatch Friday

Autumn Skies and Autumn Color around the town and around the neighborhood.

Downtown rainbow caught by my son.  Notice the cars that seem to be parked in the middle of the street?  They aren't.  They are parked on what is now the edge of the street as far as vehicle traffic.  The two lanes to their left are for bicycles.  It's a one-way street for autos, but a two-way, two lane, bicycle "street" now.  It's very confusing to vehicle drivers.  Especially since the bicycles have right of way at the corner, if they are going straight and a vehicle wants to turn.  There used to be a turn lane for cars.  At least there's a light at this particular intersection.  At cross streets with just a stop sign bicycles do not have to stop.  That's right, they don't have to stop at stop signs any more.  As long as the rider deems it safe to proceed they can bicycle on past a stop sign in my city.  Accidents waiting to happen.

Skies looking west from the Starbucks and gas station area.

To the north leaving that shopping area.

Ornamental bamboo in all its glory along the Starbucks drive-through line.  This is one of a few plants I wouldn't keep in my own yard.  The others?  Barberry.  Photinia.  Juniper (trees are okay, not the shrubs or groundcover junipers though).

Peeking over my fence towards the west.

More westward peeking.

Southern view.   The red and dark purple trees were planted a few years ago when the duplexes were built.  Just as I feared, they are starting to block my view of the mountains.

In the neighborhood, fairly much north facing.

Have a nice weekend.

  1. Here in the downtown area of Tulsa, many of the four lane streets have been converted to two lanes. They have added a bicycle lane next to the curb and then parking is between the bicycle lane and the car lane. It seems to work well. I've ridden my bike and I feel safe enough. Bicyclists still have to stop at lights and stop signs though.

I love your rainbow and fall color.

    1. Other streets have bike lanes on the side, but parking isn't allowed there.

  2. Beautiful fall color and rainbow but that first picture? The fact that bicycles can legally not follow basic rules of the road and also legally travel against auto traffic gives me shivers. Someone is going to get badly hurt or worse. Who thought of this????????????

    1. Who thought of it? I have no idea, the city didn't ask residents. A bicycle lobby? The no stopping at stop signs (when the rider deems it safe) make me nervous.

    1. My son is "trained" to take photos I might like for Skywatch Friday! He actually thinks the sky is pretty much the same all the time.

  5. They've been adding bike lanes here and there around me. Interesting traffic laws. I hope no one gets hurt.

    1. A bicyclist got killed by a car turning into a driveway in front of the bicycle in a bike lane a few years ago. The bicyclist had the right of way, not that it mattered in the end. The driver didn't get charged with a thing, and any articles about the event spent more time praising the driver's high school football "career" than the victim.

  6. Bike riders share with cars on one street near a grocery store. Main street which is blacktop has bike paths marked. Cars seem to use it for parking also. Most neighborhood streets are brick and bumpy maybe made for horse and carriages. LOL!
