Thursday Postcard Hunt - Fountains

Thursday Postcard Hunt

Fountains

Ashford Castle, County Galway, Ireland

Sacramento, CA State Capitol

Manito Park Sunken Gardens, Spokane, Washington.  The Sunken Gardens were renamed The Duncan Garden in 1941 in honor of the 1910 - 1942  park superintendent.  So, this postcard is earlier than 1941.  Online information states the original fountain (different from this one) was built in 1913, so I am guessing there is more than one fountain, as this area of the park is three acres in size.

The Spiral Fountain, made of stainless steel, at the 1939 World's Fair in N.Y.  (Flushing Meadows - Corona Park, Queens, NYC).

Next month, a new theme, Time!

  1. It seems that it used to be very popular to build fountains for World Fair's!
    I like your postcards.

    1. World Fairs seem to have been much bigger deals than now. The St. Louis one in 1904 was something. I wrote a post about something from there, and a link to a lot of photos about it. https://lisasgardenadventureinoregon.blogspot.com/2023/07/tuesday-treasures-july-11-2023.html

The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco was originally for a fair. Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay is an artificial island built for a fair as well.

  2. Nice fountains. I wonder if they are still there now.

  3. I have a small collection of World's Fair postcards (for financial reasons), but they were innovative and hugely popular. That spiral fountain is special, and so different than the usual. I wonder how many of these old fountains are still working.

  4. The Sacramento card is beautiful and very summery. The World Fair card is very futuristic with its clean lines, I would never have guessed that was 1939.

  6. You found some great fountains! Love the Irish one. The vintage postcard is awesome (I’m late, traveling to my country 😀 yay!)
