Sunday Stamps - February 16, 2025
Flags is the theme for Sunday Stamps this week.
South Korea 1979
The Netherlands 2023
Raw herring and onions, part of the series Really (or Truly) Dutch.
Did you know, I didn't, that while Holland is often used when referring to the Netherlands, Holland is really only two of the countries provinces? Also, "the" is used, in lower case, when referring to the country as a whole, in speech and text such as this.

Paraguay 1940
An airmail stamp "Tribute to heroes of Chaco," referring to the Chaco War, 1932-1935, with Bolivia over region though to be rich with oil. Paraguay lost an estimated 36,000 fighter, Bolivia about 57,000. Needless losses, as oil wasn't discovered for more than seven decades later, most in the region given to Bolivia.

Romania 1958 - 25th Anniversary of the Grivita Railway Strike of 1933
Togolese Republic 1960 - Admission to the United Nations, May 31, 1960
Next week the stamps will have No English Words!
Pieces of history I never knew about. Herring and onions was not in my childhood memories as far as me or my family eating it, but I remember it being sold in what we called appetizing stores in New York City.
ReplyDeleteReally? That's interesting! I never thought of the combination. I wouldn't like it.
DeleteThe Romanian and Togo straps are eye catching!
ReplyDeleteThat's probably good, the way a flag of a nation stamp should be!
DeleteI remember street food vans selling the fresh New Herring (Hollandse Nieuwe) when I was in the Netherlands. Very Dutch. Nice variety of flag stamps.
ReplyDeleteThen that's why it's one of the Truly Dutch series! I just looked it up, and I wouldn't try it! https://dutchreview.com/culture/food/eating-herring-in-the-netherlands/
DeleteThe Netherlands stamp is great. And I always liked the hammer and sickle symbol. the Romanian stamp is very attractive.
ReplyDeleteIt's not as old as it looks to me, a year younger than I am, that's probably why I don't see it as "old"!
DeleteGreat stamps this week. Herring and onions - no thank you.
ReplyDeleteNot something I'd like either!
DeleteIt's also interesting that in English, Netherlands is plural and not so in Dutch. The Togo flag has a sortof happy, positive look to it for what I guess was an exciting admission.
ReplyDeleteThat "Truly Dutch" stamps are all nice. I have got all of them but one!
ReplyDeleteNope, I did not know that before.
ReplyDeleteI like the stamps, herrings & onion not so much! haha
