Sunday Stamps - July 7, 2024

July's Sunday Stamps brings us Hemispheres.  Beginning with Northern Hemisphere today, then Eastern, Southern, and Western Hemispheres on the following Sundays.  We will "...tour the world of participating (in the Olympics) countries by hemisphere."

Albania 1966 with the Albanian Sheepdog.

Cameroon (Republic of) 1966 has a Mustached monkey.

Norway 2016
Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park 50 year commemorative stamp featuring Captain Sabertooth.

Next Sunday will be stamps from countries in the Eastern Hemisphere.  Today's countries happen to be in the Eastern hemisphere as well as the Northern.  Above the equator is Northern, below it, Southern.  Then, the Prime Meridian divides it into Eastern and Western portions.  So nearly all countries are in either Northern or Southern, as well as Eastern or Western hemispheres.

There is only one country that is in ALL the hemispheres!

Kiribati, 1982

Kiribati is participating in the 2024 Olympics in two competitions.  Judo and Weightlifting.  One woman (judo) and one man (weightlifting) will compete.

  1. Now I know this... I really wish that the Kiribati participats bring a medal home!

    1. So do I! Good for them for putting themselves out there as only two people.

  2. And Kiribati is also the country that is first to see the new year in (and, each new day). The Norwegian stamp is a great one for possibly enticing kids to get interested in stamp collecting. That Albanian sheepdog is serious about his job!

  4. For some reason, I went down a rabbit hole trying to translate some of the stamps on Google Translate. Now I know what Albanians call themselves and their sheep dogs, and it's an interesting pronunciation of the letter Q. My favorite was the Norwegian stamp although it may have given me nightmares as a child.

  5. It's always the countries that have just a couple athletes that fascinate me. I had no idea there was a country in all four hemispheres. Of course, that gives it a very specific location...

  6. Pirates and zoos are not a combination I'd thought of before but they have embraced the concept with his name. I like your Kiribati fun fact.

  7. The first stamp is the best! I like the dog and the pastoral image.

  9. This is such a cool way to learn about geography AND stamps, Lisa! The variety is amazing - a sheepdog, a mustached monkey, and even a pirate captain! Speaking of amazing, who knew tiny Kiribati would be in ALL four hemispheres? That's some serious trivia gold! Their small Olympic team is about to represent a geographically BIG country - and I'm one of the few who stays up late to see the parade of nations at the opening ceremony! Can't wait to see what the Eastern Hemisphere brings next week!
