Sunday Stamps - November 24, 2024

This week it's Small Animals over at Sunday Stamps

I've gone with mammals for my Small Animal stamps.

Kittens are small. This one is on a 2017 stamp from Belarus.  It was on a Postcrossing postcard.

Cuba 1981 features the Cuban solenodon, which is 16" to 22" inches, which is small considering that is from snout tip to tail tip. An interesting fact about solenodons (just two species) is that they are one of the few mammals that produce and inject venom, like a snake.  The venom is said to have evolved parallel to that of vipers.

Dominica 1984 showing a manicou, the common or black-eared opossum.   There are smaller animals, however as animals go, it's fairly small, the size of a house cat.  At least that is what I read, the opossums I've seen in the US are larger than my large house cat!

One of my favorite stamps is this cape hare on a 1968 Ghana stamp.  These small animals weight between 3 and 5 or so pounds.

I can't think of anyone who would argue a Chihuahua was not a Small Animal!  This is from Liberia 1974.

Next week will be December,  the stamps Foreign Languages.

  1. The Belarusian kitty is adorable, and the detail of the hairs on her and the chihuahua look similar. The opossum I see in my town aren't so big as a cat (thank goodness). I rather like 'almiqui' as a name, but not especially the animal.

    1. I have a very large cat too! Unfortunately, the opossums I see are usually dead on the roads. They are slow and have terrible eyesight, and being nocturnal those work against them.

    1. They are shy, and would only bite a person if bothered. Not deadly to us, just discomfort or an allergic reaction. I guess an allergic reaction might be deadly though.

    1. I only know of them because when my kids were in school we had a bake sale during an event to raise money to buy an acre of forest, and that year it was in the Dominican Republic. They information was about the Groved-tooth solenodon. Which I see now isn't an actual variety. Sounded really cool to the kids!

    1. Yeah, Chihuahuas are pretty strange! I mean that. The only breed of dog that has ever bitten me was a Chihuahua!

  5. Wow a mammal with venom, I'd keep my distance from that if ever in Cuba. Love hares, magical creatures.
