Thursday Postcard Hunt - Street Views
Thursday Postcard Hunt this week is Street Views of the Urban type.
London, Cheapside Looking West c1905
Cheapside is a street in London that has been the financial center both in past and current times.
Louvre Department Store on Rivoli Street, Paris, France early 1900s
Ledbury, Herefordshire, England
Ledbury Market House (the half-timbered structure) was built in 1617 is now an events venue.
New York City's Time Square in the '60s was quite different from today!
Continuing the Urban theme next week with Harbors and Port Views.
The first two postcards are gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI agree. I love old postcards, the black and white, foreign.
DeleteTimes Square has certainly gone through some transformations.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea the '60 were like this there, I thought it was always a tourist spot. Well, I guess it was, just not the family vacation kind of tourism I was thinking of!
DeleteI grew up in New York City and yes, the Times Square of the 60's and early 70's (I moved from NYC in the early1970's) was full of, shall we say, adult entertainment and stores that had been going out of business for 20 or 30 years. I am surprised anyone would have sold a postcard of it! When I saw Times Square for the first time after that (1999ish) what a transformation. I loved the first two postcards. What beautiful buildings.
ReplyDeleteThe postcards might have been big sellers to small town out-of-towners. Like in the musical Oklahoma and the big city "burleeque," and the lady who "went about as fur as she could go!"
DeleteI rather like seeing the chaos of the streets before traffic lights. And that huge Louvre department store!
ReplyDeleteIf you want chaos in the streets WITH traffic lights, drive in Puerto Rico! Or, the stop signs, lights seemed to work, but not the signs. Pass someone and they will speed up to pass you right back! My insurance company said my coverage extended to rentals there, but I bought more anyway. Still, it's a wonderful place to visit. Heck... the place we stayed would be a wonderful place to live!
DeleteNever been to NY, but I think I can recognise London and Paris streets. How different look cities right now!
ReplyDeleteI would guess the Paris building would look pretty much the same, and the way Cheapside has that oddly shaped on on the oddly shaped corner, I'd think it was unchanged too. Things in US cities seem to be removed and replaced often.
DeleteThe spacious street of Paris looks a more leisurely ride than London's intersection but both with impressive buildings.
ReplyDeleteLondon does look a lot more hectic, it seems they are going every direction. So does New York!
