I'm not a fan of kale, I grew it for K! I have grown kalettes, from seed sent to me from the UK. Fascinating plants. Pretty purple-green. Like tiny kales on Brussel sprout stalks. They got covered in aphids though.
I was so excited by them, but those aphids were too thick. Some kinds of aphids are born pregnant with pregnant females. That's why there may be none and a day later too many. It's weird!
We grew some regular kale in a large container and overwintered it - our low for the winter was 10F, which helped. It started to grow recently and immediately started to bolt, but the new growth has no bitterness. I'm intrigued by the kalettes. Some years we order from Johnny's Selected Seeds but I think we are buying only locally sold seed this year. We'll see.
"Kalettes"... I like it!

DeleteYup, sometimes you have to do it to complete the A to Z...
ReplyDeleteOr stretch the letters, especially Q and X! I have some scientific names in the mix this year.

ReplyDeleteI have the photos on the old computer, I didn't move over a lot of the past years' gardening yet.
DeleteLike puppies, the tiny plants are soooo cute!!!
ReplyDeleteI love kale. I grow one variety for my chickens and another for human consumption.
