Thursday Postcard Hunt: Buses, Trams, and Taxis

 Thursday Postcard Hunt

Buses, Trams, and Taxis

Here we may see how terms differ from location to location.  By definition, a tram is a streetcar or trolley, some being light rail transit. In the U.S., at least the west, a streetcar is called a streetcar, and I haven't heard the term "trolley" ever used!  Although, since finding the second card down, I see San Diego calls its transit "The Trolley." Cable cars and gondolas come along in week #4 to further confuse things, since some are called trams!  So, what have I found?

A double decker bus in London.

The San Diego Trolley is a light rail system.

A Volkswagen bus parked in front of the Chollar Mansion, Virginia City, Nevada, on a vintage postcard.

I learned a new word for next week's postcard hunt.  Tuk-tuk.  Not something I'm familiar with, so I'll stick to the other, bicycles!

  1. In Switzerland, apart to gas operated busses, we have "trolley busses", they have an overhead wires.
I think a tuk-tuk s a three-wheeled vehicle, modeled after the old-fashioned rickshaw. They use them in Southeast Asia.
Lisa, thank you for your frequent visits to my blog. Took me a while to realize you're a different Lisa ;-)

    1. Tuk-tuk is a cute word, although I will guess it means something fairly average, like rickshaw! I'm a different Lisa!

  2. Great point of view of the San Diego trolley. I always like VW buses!

    1. We had one when I was growing up, bugs or beetles too. The bus we took on vacations and my parents sleep in the far back the seat folded down. I was short enough to lay crosswise on the floor. That didn't last long, I grew! They do not stand high winds well!

  3. I love that view of London! I think San Diego still has trolley cars in the downtown area.

    1. That one is a postcard my mother sent to her mother in 1970.

  4. I'm aware a tuk-tuk (or rickshaw0 is not a common thing for a postcard, but I have several, so I included it. A 'tram' in Toronto, is called a 'streetcar' with the stop, in bygone days, shortened to a 'car stop'. All these different words for the same thing is very confusing! I never thought of a VW bus - great choice!

    1. Oh, good, I'd like to see a tuk-tuk! It is confusing when I got to things like gondolas, as in not boats.

  5. I always think of Judy Garland singing 'clang clang clang went the trolley' in Meet Me In St Louis (usually shown here at Christmas time). The Chollar Mansion sounds fascinating, its size is deceptive from the roadside view.

    1. I think of that song about the S.F. cable cars! They have bells that clang!

  6. Too many terms. I'm glad you were able to decipher them.

    1. I didn't really! No right or wrong though. One postcard in the blog hop was something I am using in a future week, because the word means something different here.

  7. I love the San Diego postcard. It's a striking perspective, and the red adds even more drama.

    1. Maybe the red colors of a lot of public transportation allow them to be seen coming.

  8. Postcards are such a nostalgic thing, I just hope people start using it even now, just as a nice keepsake

    1. I get one now and again from people on vacation. I see them in stores. I live near some tourist spots, so there are those.
